Functional Fitness: Why CrossFit Prepares You for Mardi Gras

CrossFit recognizes 10 fitness domains: stamina, strength, coordination, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, accuracy, and endurance. Each CrossFit class is constantly varied in order to promote proficiency in each domain. It just so happens that these are the same qualities that, if perfected, prepare you to experience the Mardi Gras season to the fullest. Yep. Doing CrossFit prepares you for Mardi Gras. Here’s how…

If you live outside of New Orleans you may only know about Mardi Gras Day, but Carnival is an entire season with weeks of parades and festivities. It literally will wear you out unless you have been participating in some sort of metabolic conditioning. Everyone hates the running days, but you can thank us later…

You try hauling an ice chest, a parade ladder, 3 tailgate chairs, and 5 bags of throws to your car that’s parked 3 miles away and tell me that CrossFit didn’t prepare you for that! Three cheers for functional fitness!

You’ll need some coordination for all the dancing you’ll be doing!  Whether you’re a 610 Stomper, a Pussyfooter, or just dancing with your friends, it’s hard to keep still when Mardi Gras Mambo is blaring!

Stretching out your quads properly is essential for all the port-o-let hovering you’ll be doing! All of those mobility drills will certainly come in handy.

You can’t truly appreciate the concept of “power” until you’ve deflected a pack of beads with your face, especially if the pack of beads was thrown by someone who rides in Endymion. Luckily, because you do CrossFit, you probably have some arnica gel in your medicine cabinet to help heal your bruises.

Speed comes in handy if you ever have the need to hop a parade barricade to run across the street to use the bathroom and make it back before the next float.

I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty freakin’ agile when I’m catching beads in one hand while also managing not to spill my drink. Thanks CrossFit.

Parade ladders. Enough. Said.

Don’t be the person who picks up beads from the ground. Do you need to work on hand-eye coordination so you can catch with accuracy? Come do CrossFit.

Carnival is a marathon, not a sprint. You have to be well adept in how to properly pace yourself if you’re going to make it all the way to Fat Tuesday. Trust me! Just like you wouldn’t go all out in the first 2 minutes of a chipper workout, do not– I repeat, do NOT go hard on your first day of parades.

What are other things CrossFit has prepared you for?
